.22 LR Handgun
Just wondered if anyone here had some opinions on any of the following:
Walther P22 Sig Sauer Mosquito Sport CZ 75B Kadet I'm kinda looking for an inexpensive .22 to hurl some cheap lead down range. I've been reading some reviews, but they seem rather biased and I'm not sure I trust them. |
Re: .22 LR Handgun
I just got a S&W 21A several weeks ago. So far I have no complaints after shooting nearly three boxes of the 550 rd Federal Bulk Pack.
Got the gun, 3 additional magazines, and a basic Bushnell red dot for $427 out the door. Still haven't put the red dot on it. |
Re: .22 LR Handgun
Go with the Ruger MK III or MK III 22/45. Great guns. I own a 22/45 with the 5 1/2" Bull Barrel. It's an accurate shooter.

Not to mention that they have AK47 like reliability. |

My choice also. Kind of bear to take apart and put back together( at least the first time you do it) but a really nice shooting firearm with lots of aftermarket options. |
Re: .22 LR Handgun
Noone ever mentions the Beretta Neos at about $310 or so out the door. I have one and it comes apart with just one screw/turn dial! It is a 22lr automatic with a built in red dot/scope base. It eats everything I feed it no joke. I have about 2000 rounds or more thru it and it maybe fte/ftf 3 or 4 times. It is extremely reliable with 2 single stack 10 round mags that come with it.
I suggest the 6 in barrel as provides a good balance and sighting and a hair more velocity than the 4 in. For the money, it can't be beat in my opinion only matched......maybe. ( by the S & W 21a for the money ) The Ruger MKIII would be my other choice though but a lil more cash. As far as what you mentioned I don't know about the CZ 75, but know CZ seems to know how to make firearms. The p22 seems to be hit and miss from owners on another forum I used to frequent. And the sig, from what I heard on the same forum is don't bother. I"m not a sales man or not trying to be biased at all Because I was in the same position as you. Though I forgot to mention BUCKMARK, they have some good ones too. SUMMARY S & W 21a or Beretta Neos for best bang for the buck. (polymer frames) Buckmark or Ruger MKIII for a little more cash and aftermarket. (aluminum/steel frames) Good Luck |

I do have plenty of experience with the Ruger MKII and heartily recommend them. |

I have been wanting one of these for some time. Probably will be my next gun purchase. About 1300 plus the stamp. http://www.impactguns.com/store/media/awc_amphibian.jpg |
Re: .22 LR Handgun
Thanks everyone for the info.
I'm not sure, but I've never been a big fan of the Rimfire shape that the Rugers have. If it had more of a standard auto kinda 1911 shape I'd like it more. Granted aesthetics are only superficial and how it shoots is much more important. I guess I'm looking for something I can shoot and gain some skill with before I decide to buy a larger caliber gun that's much more expensive to burn ammo through. I thought Sigs had a really good reputation. FBI uses them, though maybe that model isn't up to spec. Like I said, thanks for the info and feel free to share any other thoughts you have on the matter. I might even try one of the Ruger .22 Single Action Revolvers. Probably not though. |

All Ruger 22/45's (including Hunter) have the same grip shape, feel, and familiarity of the famous 1911 .45 caliber pistol. The perfect low-cost trainer, it is ideal as a low-cost pistol, allows for quiet practice, and provides shooters with the familiar and preferred 1911 grip. http://www.ruger.com/Firearms/images/Products/327L.jpg |
Re: .22 LR Handgun
Have no major complaints with:
CZ 75 Kadet top-half conversion - easy fit on existing frame, and I don't remember any failure to feed, fire, extract or eject. Ruger MKII - runs like a champ. If I could have only one .22 autoloader, this would be the one. Easy to field strip for cleaning, but I always have to look at the owners' manual for reassembly! Don't know anything about the newer MKIII's. S&W M617 6 Shot, 4-inch - maybe a little heavy for a .22 , but accurate and size / weight mimics larger centerfire revolver. Take care, Mod1 |
Re: .22 LR Handgun
The Ruger is by far the best choice in an inexpensive pistol. The stock guns are wonderful and the aftermarket parts are nearly limitless.
I shot a target model for several years with a simple trigger job and grip upgrade.....200 to 400 rounds a week every week for years in NRA Conventional Pistol ("Bullseye")......you can become a national champion on a Ruger if you want. I later upgraede to a Walther GSP....more than 3X the price of the Ruger but worth it at the level I was shooting at the time.....but you can go a long way with the Ruger. The grip angle is very natural and worked well for me.....if you want the 1911 feel....get the 22/45 version. Concentrate on single shot slow fire....once this is mastered....more rapid fire will follow and be very accurate. It is all good. |
Re: .22 LR Handgun
I love my Mosquito. The fact that it so closely "apes" a full-size Sig is important to me...just don't bother trying to buy an extra mag, they are unobtanium!

Re: .22 LR Handgun
Thanks again for the advice everyone. I really do appreciate it. I'll give the Ruger a second look.
I'm actually a little torn. I was thinking about a .40 S&W pistol, but I can't believe the difference in ammo price. .22LR is only about 30% the cost of .40 S&W!! I'll let you know what I end up doing! |

I chose the Browning "Buckmark" as my rimfire pistol:

Re: .22 LR Handgun
Browning Buckmark is another popular choice...

Re: .22 LR Handgun
I have a Walther P22 "PeeWee". It is a nice gun to play with at the range. Also small enough for a second carry. I also have a ruger bearcat 22 6 shooter. I like it a lot and am fairly accurate with it. It just takes me a while to load it. Pre loaded mags are great for the range when you only get 1 hour!
